In "In Defense of Food", Michael Pollan says to eat fewer seeds and more leaves. And don't eat anything your grandmother wouldn't recognize as food.

My grandmother would have recognized French toast as food, so I'm not sure how well that system works...

To my Gramma, "vegetable" meant "root". Carrots, potatoes, beets, parsnips, turnips, rutabagas, onions, etc., with an occasional cabbage thrown in. I don't think I'd ever seen lettuce or spinach in her house.
