5087 HOTW - Chief Hampton

Saturday, September 24, 2016

"Oh, my dear little librarian, you pile up enough tomorrows,
and you'll find you are left with nothing but a lot of empty yesterdays.
I don't know about you, but I'd like to make today worth remembering."
-- Professor Hill, "The Music Man"  --

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi. Long time no update.  I'd been trying to get definitive stuff on the breast problem before I try to write about it, and it seemed like every day I'm up in the air but I'd know something more meaningful in another few days, and then that day would come and go and there'd be more stuff that was up in the air.  If it's frustrating for others, think how it must be for me.   One thing I've learned, though - ignore anything the doctors say, and believe what the nurses say.

So, anyway, I'll try to get an update on that topic either later today or tomorrow.

Today I have a Honey of the Week (HOTW)!  Haven't had one of them in a very long time.  I really truly haven't seen any that made my tummy tickle.  Today I found one.  Maybe I should call him HOTY!

You may have heard the stories coming out of mostly the south about clowns trying to lure kids into the woods?  Yeah.  I suspect it started out as a joke, and then some kids in other localities thought it sounded like fun, and now it's the latest dumb thing for idiots to do, either to make a bogus report, or to put a mask on and cause some excitement.

I happened to read this article this morning about clowns showing up in a small town in Mississippi, and I was stunned by the photo of the local Chief of Police.  A HOTW if I ever saw one!  It seems he's not only a hunk (I'm a sucker for cheekbones and dimples, and he's got both), but he has some very novel ways of going after the bad guys.  Novel enough that they sometimes show up at the police station and turn themselves in.

So I did some research, looking for better photos, and found out a little more about him.

This is a newspaper article about how he operates, and there's a video there,  and this is from a radio station about some of the controversy caused by his use of Facebook to address suspects, and his, um, less than friendly language on Facebook.  Which reminds me, he has a smooth soft voice in the video, something else I can't resist.

He sounds like a really cool character.  If you want to see how he uses Facebook, look for Tchula Police Department.

So, without further ado, my first HOTW in maybe years, Chief Kenneth Hampton:

If you want to check him out without the hat, and with maybe even a smile, see the videos at the links above.

------------------------------------

Bonus.  I don't know who this is or where I found him, he was just out there lurking in my HOTW folder, and I don't feel like doing an image search to find out anything else right now, but he's certainly worth "honorable mention":

Actually, I have to admit, this guy scares me a little.  He doesn't look like someone I'd want to snuggle next to.  But it's also true that if he were in a crowded room, I wouldn't be able to stop staring.

--------------------------------------------------------------

And just because, this from historian Jeffrey Herf in "The American Interest":
"Trump discovered what the classic demagogues of the 20th century understood: namely, that in a democracy it is possible to gain millions of votes by appealing to the worst in people. Trump, like Mussolini and Hitler but also like Stalin and Mao, understands that there are millions who enjoy hatred, who take pleasure in humiliating others, who find relief in giving a face and a name—Mexicans and Muslims today, Jews, capitalists and imperialists—to complex economic and social processes."

I'm amazed that no one has yet pushed Trump on his wonderful plan to eliminate ISIS.  I guess they know there's no point in trying, because there IS no plan, we all know that, but at least you'd think someone would point out that many people are dying horrible deaths every day, and if his plan would save them, then as a human being, if he has the tiniest ounce of humanity, he has a responsibility to divulge it so it can be put into action immediately, and all those refugees could go home.

4076 HOTW - Omar Sharif

Saturday, July 25, 2015

You are not entitled to your opinion. You are entitled to your
informed opinion. No one is entitled to be ignorant."
--Harlan Ellison--

---------------------------------------------------

I just discovered that Omar Sharif died about 2 weeks ago.  He deserves a Honey of the Week honor, although to tell you the truth, I never felt the kind of tummy-tickle that most of my HOTWs gave me.  I really liked the way he did make me feel, but I think at the same time I was a bit in awe of him.  He was an amazingly accomplished man.

I happen to own the thobe he wore in the night camp scene in the movie "Hidalgo".  It thrills me just to know that it had touched his body.

3822 HOTW - Everett McGill

Friday, February 21, 2014

I haven't done a Honey of the Week in ages, but I found one this evening!

I watched the 1999 (I think) movie "The Straight Story" this evening.  It's the story of Alvin Straight, and his trip to visit his ailing brother - 240 miles away, riding the distance on a lawn mower towing a home-made trailer.

The movie is almost two hours, and it's slow moving (just like Alvin, who is in his early 70s, has bad hips, walks with two canes, and can't see well enough to drive a car), but it's wonderful, worth every minute of the two hours.  If you have a chance to rent it, I highly recommend it.

It's all true, the whole story.  The only thing they changed was, for some unknown reason, the timing of the trip.  Alvin actually set out in something like June, arriving in August, but in the movie he sets out in September, arriving late October.  Folks from that area who saw the movie caught that discrepancy, because of the bicycle racers Alvin meets on the way - that race takes place in July.

Anyway, Alvin's first mower didn't get far, so he bought a newer (only 30 years old) John Deere to restart the trip.  The John Deere salesman's part is only a few minutes long, but it was long enough for me to develop a crush on him.  That part was played by Everett McGill:

Yummy.  (But somehow a still picture doesn't quite convey it.  The eyes and the smile, you know. See the movie.)

I think part of the attraction might be that he reminds me a lot of my father's sister Irene's husband Chick (Charles).  Uncle Chick was a strong, tall, silent, farmer and in my preteen years I had a terrible crush on him.  He died when a bulldozer fell on him (really).  I guess even the bulldozer had a literal crush on him.

3788 I don't get some people's taste

Sunday, October 27, 2013

There's a bunch of women discussing the attractiveness of a Scotsman on "Cute Overload", here.

As one woman said, he's "a little long in the tooth, and portly to boot, but a full head of hair, nice smile, lovely accent", but still a candidate for the "Men of" calendar.

Yeah, I wouldn't mind meeting him.  He has potential.  And my taste in men runs to dark hair and eyes.

Then the commenters suggest who he reminds them of.  One woman suggested Mr. Bates from “Downton Abby”, and others agreed. Many women have found Mr. Bates attractive, including me.  (He's the one who went to jail on bogus charges.  I'm unsure how much of Mr. Bates' attractiveness has to do with his appearance, and how much is the character's personality and our sympathy for his situation.)

Anyway, a few other women suggested who he looks like, and here's where I lost the connection.

Um, Benny Hill?
Johnathan Winters?
Uh, yeah, they all have squarish faces, and hair, and the proper number of eyes and noses, but the level of attractiveness is way off.  Not even close!  In fact, I have to wonder about any woman who finds either of those two attractive.

Hmmmmm.

I guess it's good that different women (and men) see and are attracted to different things.  Otherwise a lot of us would never find a mate.

3670 HOTW - Sugar Ray Leonard

Saturday, November 24, 2012

Teach a child to be polite and courteous in the home and, when he grows up,
he'll never be able to merge his car onto a freeway.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

We haven't had a Honey of the Week in a very long time.  Boxer Macho Comacho's shooting and death have been in the news for a few days, and that brought to mind the only boxer whose career I had followed.

Sugar Ray Leonard.
Isn't that just the cutest face you've ever seen?  I had a terrible crush on him in the '80s.  I suspect this photo is from his Olympic days, in his late teens.  He looks about 10 years old.

In his early thirties he had surgery for a detached retina, and so he decided to retire from the ring.  I breathed a sigh of relief.  Then, the next year, he un-retired.  I yelled "No, no, don't mess up that pretty face!"  I really was upset about it.
I needn't have worried.  He was GOOD!  That pretty face rarely got touched.

He's now in his mid-50s, and he has aged well.  He's still pretty.
He published his autobiography last year, in which he reveals for the first time that he had been sexually abused by an Olympic trainer, and the effect that keeping that secret had on his life.  The NY Times article on the book is here:  http://www.nytimes.com/2011/05/18/sports/in-book-sugar-ray-leonard-says-coach-sexually-abused-him.html?adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1353772940-XYsSyQho07lvcjNeTgiACg&_r=0

Now that he has told his story, he is involved in child abuse prevention activities.  This is a video of his speech at the October 29, 2012 child sexual abuse conference at Penn State:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JKaquBpYeQ.   Skip to 5:19 to skip the intro and see how pretty he is.

Sigh.

3366 HOTW redux

Wednesday, October 12, 2011

Ignorance is not knowing something you should. Nescience [ne-she-ence]
is not knowing something you should not be expected to know. [Adjective - nescient]
If someone calls you ignorant, correct them. You are nescient. Now who's ignorant?

-----------------------------------------------

In post #3359 I dubbed JR Martinez as HOTW. This video is further justification (as if I need any). Embedding has been disabled, so you have to follow the link to YouTube to see it, but do go. Listen to his message, enjoy the body.

3359 HOTW - J.R. Martinez

Tuesday, September 20, 2011

A problem cannot be solved at the same level at which it was created.
-- Albert Einstein --

---------------------------------------------------------

It's been a long time since I picked a Honey of the Week. This guy has been on my radar a long time. I first saw him while channel surfing through "All My Children", and he stopped me. Instant reaction to him. Since then I occasionally check the soap to see if he's in the day's storyline.

He was badly burned in Afghanistan. Heavily scarred. But he still has the most gorgeous eyes, and he's smoothly sexy. His voice, body, the way he moves. Plus, he's 100% nice guy. He absolutely fits my qualifications for HOTW.

He was brought to mind by last night's Dancing With the Stars. I didn't watch the show, but I heard he'd done well, so I found the video on YouTube:

His scars barely show there. Must be heavily made up.

3251 Photos from Libya

Tuesday, May 17, 2011

I’m hoping my ship comes in before my dock rots.

-----------------------------------------

This week's Big Picture set from Boston.com is from Libya.Link
(Click photo to enlarge. Doesn't he have a wonderful face?)

Most of the photos are more mundane than this one, but they give a good feel for life during rebellion. I chose this particular photo because I had a visceral reaction to that guy. Ye olde tummy-quiver. HOTW-worthy.

3202 HOTW - The "Lemond Bishop" character

Saturday, March 26, 2011

We are not educated well enough to perform the necessary act of intelligently selecting our leaders.
-- Walter Cronkite --

--------------------------------------------------------------

I don't regularly watch "The Good Wife". If it's on and I happen to notice, then I do watch it.

I watched it the other night.

There's a recurring character, Lemond Bishop (that's how the show spells it, but I wonder if it should be pronounced LeMond?), a drug kingpin. A very impressive character. Apparently he has been in many episodes, but I'd never seen him before.

I was stunned. My stomach went hollow and dropped.

I don't know why he fascinated me so much. It probably had a lot to do with the similarities to The Man. Similar skin tone, same head shape, similar eyes. They both fill space the same way. They move the same way, that leopard prowl. Emotionally vulnerable when it fits, impenetrable when it doesn't, and very still and observant in between.

I know you can't assign attributes of a character to the actor playing him, so I suspect, having seen him only once, only in this role, and only in the "Ham Sandwich" episode, it's the character that fascinates me, not necessarily the actor. (On the other hand, if the things that grabbed me are not already a part of the actor, then he's one damn good actor!)

I carefully watched the end credits, to see who he was. He was not credited. I went online and searched a few zillion articles on and reviews of "The Good Wife". The character is mentioned often, but not the actor.

I finally resorted to a "The Good Wife" fan forum, and asked. I did get the answer, and the fans were surprised that not only was he not credited on the show, when they went to the actor's own publicity sites, including things like IMDb and Wikipedia, "The Good Wife" is not listed for him. There was a lot of speculation as to why.

Now that I know his name, I have found him a few places linked to "The Good Wife". Very few.

I present the Honey of the Week, Mike Colter:

Of course, Lemond Bishop was all spiffed up in suit and tie. But I kinda like thinking about a little fresh sweat on him, as opposed to talc.

3251 Free clothes, unfettered police, and a semi-HOTW

Saturday, February 5, 2011

Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself.
-- George Bernard Shaw --

-----------------------------------------------------------

A few weeks ago I mentioned how I had used a sale, a preferred customer discount, and earned coupons to get a jacket, sweater, jeans, and slacks, over $200 retail, from my favorite online boutique for just $9, the shipping cost.

Today I got an envelope in the mail. They have promoted me to "Elite customer". I still get the purchase points toward coupons and all the other goodies, but now I also get an automatic additional 5% off all purchases (no minimum, applies to the outlet, too, and can be used with other discounts and coupons), and free shipping on all purchases.

That last "purchase" would have been not only free, but they'd have owed me money!

Really, people. I buy only from the outlet and never pay more than 20% of their original retail price. I have a Visa card through them, and I get points toward coupons no matter what I use that card for. Pretty soon, they'll be just sending me free clothes.

--------------------------------

This is weird. At least three states, Illinois, Massachusetts, and Oregon, have passed eavesdropping laws that make it a crime to audio-record a conversation without the consent of all parties involved. You can go to jail for doing it.

As a contrast, in New York and a few other states, for example, only one party to the recording has to be aware, which means you can record an interaction you are having with someone, but you cannot tape/film/record something happening between other unaware people. The big difference, however, is that although the "illegal" recording cannot be used in court, you won't go to jail for doing it.

Here's what it means (from the Switched story at the link): "In Chicago, the law is drawing significant attention because, there, recording interactions with law enforcement officials constitutes a class one felony that can carry a sentence of up to 15 years in jail, even if the conversation happens in public. The New York Times has reported on two cases that are due to go before a judge this spring, and could result in serious jail time." (Recording someone other than law enforcement officials is a lesser felony and can get you no more than five years. They're serious about protecting police, prosecutors, and so on.)

The ACLU has brought federal suits challenging the law, but the suits have been dismissed by Illinois judges.

From the NY Times article, "Mark Donahue, president of the Fraternal Order of Police, said his organization “absolutely supports” the eavesdropping act as is and was relieved that the challenge had failed. Mr. Donahue added that allowing the audio recording of police officers while performing their duty “can affect how an officer does his job on the street.”"

No shit. Is he really saying that the police would be hindered by allowing people to see/hear what they do/say in their interactions with the public? I could spend 15 years in jail for recording an officer attempting to coerce sexual favors from me during a traffic stop, even if the recording proves his guilt? Am I the only person frightened by the suppressive effects of that law, and by Mr. Donahue's implication?

--------------------------------

DeSean Jackson sure is pretty. I'd feel like a child molester if I made him Honey of the Week, but I do like looking at him. Such pretty eyes, cheekbones, smile, arms. And he's not big and bulky like most of his teammates. He's smooth and tight. If he were twenty years older, he'd definitely be a HOTW. Click on the link for the pix.

3189 HOTW - Fabrice Morvan

Wednesday, December 8, 2010

“Never confuse virtue with the lack of opportunity.”

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ha! I remembered another Honey of the Week! There's a good chance you didn't recognize the name at first.

I first saw this guy and his partner in the late '80s in an MTV video that absolutely blew my socks off. It wasn't the music. It was the smoldering sexuality. His come-to-me eyes. His fantastic dream body. The way he moved, like he owned every cubic inch of the space and the air around him was thick, and hot. And sweet. And he flowed through it. Umph.

Remember Milli Vanilli? That's Fab Morvan on the right, Rob Pilatus on the left. Rob also had a great body and moves, but he didn't have the dangerous look. His eyes were lighter.

Rob died of a drug overdose a few years after the scandal. Fab is still going strong, making records on his own. He's actually a decent singer and a terrific dancer, but I guess you could say the taint has followed him. It's a sad story. They were young when they were recruited, and they were employees who did what they were told, and it was no different from what a lot of other singers and groups had done before and and are still doing now (only now they're more likely to use auto-tune, that thing that can make anyone sound good). They just got too popular too fast, and there may have been a lot of jealousy in the fierce reaction.

A lot of people are not aware that on the European releases of their albums, it was clear and upfront that they were not the singers. For some unknown to me reason, that information was omitted on the US releases.

I almost cried when they dropped out of my world.

Fab, then:

Fab now. He has to be well over 40. He has aged well. He's still yummy.

I was reminded of him by this blog post: http://thewisdomofadistractedmind.blogspot.com/2010/12/not-letting-it-be.html. There's a glimpse of him in the video, and in that tiny instant he still had the same effect on me.

3051 HOTW - Gene Wilder

Wednesday, August 11, 2010

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails.
-- 1 Corinthians 13:4-7 --

---------------------------------------------------------

After you've seen some of my other choices for Honey of the Week, this will seem like a very odd choice. I tend to respond best to dark hair (or no head hair) and dark eyes, but this guy has sandy hair and blue eyes. And it's unlikely anyone would consider him handsome, or sexy, or dignified, or suave. And the body? Eh. But for some reason I have always gotten that wonderful "tickle in the tummy" from him. I adore him. I want to rock him to sleep (the enthusiastic way). I admit I don't understand my own reaction.

I guess I have eclectic taste in men.

795 Aborted Auction Action

Saturday, July 15, 2006

I went to an auction this evening (auction at 5:30, preview just before). They usually go to almost midnight, but I left at 7 pm.

There wasn't much of anything I was interested in, or curious what it would sell for. Most of it seemed like just junk. There was one pretty little carved walnut cameo back settee (that needed reupholstering), but I already own 5 Victorian settees (one a reproduction), so I certainly don't need another. I decided if it looked like it was going to go for less than $100, I'd buy it. It went for $125. That was a very good buy. There was also a 1967 Camero convertible (one owner, a woman who had won it on a TV quiz program forty years ago) that went for $18,000. I was curious about that.

After the settee and the car sold, I discovered I was reading my book and paying absolutely no attention to any of the items being auctioned, so I decided to leave. First time I've ever left an auction before the last page of the catalogue. What's more, I believe it's the first time I didn't bid. Not even once.

You know, I wouldn't have left if there had been any interesting men there. Seems like all the men at these auctions are with their girlfriend, or with their boyfriend. The only men there alone are in their 80s

... except for the caterer. He's a gorgeous black guy about 6'5" and BROAD, with nice eyes and a deep quiet voice. A Culinary Institute graduate. Daughter met him once, and had pretty much the same reaction to him that I have. The food at these auctions is as famous as the antics of the auctioneer. We have curried chicken pasta salad, sausage casserole, the best baked ham I've ever tasted, mushroom or spinach quiche, pineapple bread pudding, various fruit pies, stuff like that. Gorgeous, and he can cook, too. He complimented me this evening on my weight loss, shortly after I turned around too quickly during the preview and ran face first into his midsection. Too bad he's at least 20 years younger than I.

Off to watch my Saturday night PBS Britcoms. I've seen every one of these ancient episodes a hundred times, but it's relaxing anyway.
