3101 Oddities

Justice Louis Brandeis often mentioned the impression made on him by a man who wrote: “I regret that I cannot comply with your request. So that you may know that my refusal is final, I give no reasons.”
-- Dean Acheson --

Yesterday in the grocery store I saw a new product - sweet potatoes wrapped in a tight plastic skin, "for microwaving". They cost 50% more than the equivalent sweet potatoes unwrapped.

Duh? I microwave sweet potatoes all the time. You just turn them a few times.

I see a lot of bedrooms "done" by professional decorators, and in most of them, they put the head of the bed at a window. Maybe they think it makes a focal point, or the curtains extend the headboard.

For at least half the country, though, that's a very bad idea. I don't care how good the seal is, and how good the storm windows, in the winter you WILL get a cold draft off the window.

--------------------------------

The last decorator show I watched addressed the problem of decorating a bedroom for a 13-year-old girl without making it too feminine. The situation is that the older brother was going to college. He'd had a very large bedroom. The girl's room was very small. The brother said she could have his room while he was away, but when he was home on breaks or holidays, he wanted the room back. This arrangement was fine with the parents.

Um, I don't understand. Wouldn't it make more sense that she inherit the room now, and when he comes back for his short visits, HE gets the smaller room? It's not like he had a lot of furniture or a huge bed. Is he already planning to move back in after he graduates?

Be careful about buying something fancy or expensive, like a car or house. Suddenly everyone will think you can pick up the check. Sheesh. The big purchase makes it even more unlikely that you can throw money around. You already thew everything you had down a hole, but they really don't "get it".
