5018 Recycling Anger

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

I am very angry at (with?) the township.

Several weeks ago we got notice that all recyclables, collected twice a month, were to be put out in either closed lidded containers or in clear plastic bags.  I had been using an open container -- a hip-high kitchen trash can.  It was light enough for me to easily carry out, and big enough to hold everything.

Well, there's nothing with a good lid that would be convenient for me.  I'd almost need something I could wheel out, and all the wheeled thingies are too big, so I decided to go the clear plastic bag route.

I visited several stores before I concluded that there's no such thing (not in stores around here, anyway) as a clear kitchen-sized trash bag.  Not to mention that even if there had been a space on the shelves labelled for clear bags, everyone in the township was looking for them.  I finally bought some clear bags in a hardware store, but they're sized for yard waste, and are ridiculously huge.  Also ridiculously expensive.  But it was the last box, so I bought them and used them for one collection, realized they were ridiculous, and then went looking online.  Found the right stuff on Amazon.  Used the Amazon ones for the second collection.

The third collection since being told to use clear plastic bags is tomorrow.

Today, late this afternoon, we all got phone calls and alert emails from the township.  Recycle materials must be put in closed containers only.  "Plastic bags will not be picked up."

Changing horses with less than one day's notice.

You could hear the swearing all up and down the street.

The phone call was a recording, but I swore at it anyway.  Loudly.

----------------------------------------

I thought hard about what I could use and finally remembered that I had two of those old green Rubbermaid stackable recycle bins in the garage, the kind with the sloping flaps on the top front.  I don't remember why I'd kept them all these years, haven't seen them actually used since recycling started three or four decades ago. But, they DO have lids....

So I put my stuff in them and put them out (paper in one, glass, plastic, and cans in the other).  I hope the guys recognize them for what they are, and don't toss the entire recycle bins themselves into the truck, too.  I also have corrugated cardboard (cut, flattened, bundled and tied, as ordered!) sitting next to them, and six huge kitty litter jugs all tied together by their handles (which they may or may not take, although they are #2, but they're not in a "closed container", sigh), so it would be easy for the guys to just throw everything in without thinking.

I'm going to have to watch for them to make sure the right things go and the wrong things don't.  They come anywhere between 7:30 am and 3:00 pm.

Sigh.

Consumotherapy - buying something because it makes you feel good.

--------------------------------------------------------

Something I don't understand about the Olympics - I thought all the athletes and teams were supposed to be "amateurs".  Yeah, I know there's government support and sponsorships and so on.  There has to be because they have to practice so much and that takes time and money.  But isn't there a line somewhere?  The US basketball team is all professional players.  I mean multimillionaire players from professional NBA teams.  How can they be considered in any way amateurs?  How are they in the Olympics?  Why don't they just have a World Series of basketball instead?  That's what it is....

--------------------------------

I have two layers of long heavy fringe hanging in the arch between the living room and the kitchen.  It had been on spring tension rods, but eventually the rods started sagging, and when the Nugget goes through sometimes she gets a wee bit tangled and pulls one or both down.  Jasper occasionally attacks them, too.

So I bought some brackets and two lengths of PVC pipe.

The PVC started sagging, so I bought some wood dowel and fed that into the pipes to strengthen them.

They still sagged.  That fringe is heavy!

I decided to buy a small diameter metal pipe, like for plumbing, or gas lines.  That won't sag!

Wow!  Have you priced pipe lately?  It's like $13 or more per FOOT!  Holy cow!   Why?!

I ended up with big fat wooden doweling, like would be used for regular DIY curtain rods.  Not what I wanted, but it seems to be holding up ok so far.

--------------------------------

The township collects garbage twice a week here, Mondays and Thursdays.  It's paid from taxes and there doesn't seem to be any limit on how much you can put out.  I put out one small kitchen bag half full.  They collect recycling twice a month, first and third Wednesdays.  I put out 2 tall kitchen trash cans full every recycle collection.

My production is just the opposite of what they seem to expect.  I have four times as much recycling as garbage.  Two weeks of trash paper and cardboard will bury me alive.  I think that may be the norm around here, since I see people putting recycle stuff out on garbage days.  When whatever container they're using is full, it goes out.  Most people don't have enough room to store that much recyclable stuff.

I wonder if the township is aware of the relative amounts, and that people who would like to recycle are forced to put recyclables out on garbage day?  I wonder if they care?  The township recycle center is just up the road from me, between me and the grocery store, and they're open every day until 3 pm, so when the paper and cardboard gets overwhelming, I just drop a load off there.  People who have jobs can't do that.

(No, I am not going to volunteer to do neighborhood recycle center runs.)

--------------------------------

I once knew a country bar in the Gettysburg, Pa. area with a hunting theme, that labelled the restrooms "Setters" and "Pointers", along with a picture of the dog breed.  Do you know that there were people (like my friend Jeannie) who couldn't figure out which door was theirs?  Jeannie said she couldn't tell by looking at the picture whether it was a girl dog or a boy dog.

I liked her anyway.

3193 Baby shopping

Thursday, March 17, 2011

No matter how much you care, some people just don't care back.

--------------------------------------------------------

Daughter and I went shopping for baby stuff yesterday, but not at a store, at a community college.

"They" (not sure who) run a multi-day consignment sale in a huge gymnasium twice a year, spring and fall. Rows and rows of tables and racks covered with everything from baby furniture and clothing and toys to maternity clothes and car seats. Some is lightly used, and some is never used.

Daughter got a slew of sacques and footie-sleepers for like $2 each, and a bag of undershirts and booties for $1, and several little shirt&shorts sets. I bought a little umbrella-folding stroller, and a light over-the-shoulder sling for my use. Hercules joined us when he got out of work. He fell madly in love with a huge solid wood "fancy name brand" highchair, and bought that. I think he just loved the wood - but the thing doesn't fold, it's huge, and their house is tiny. I think he'll be sorry, but they can just sell it next fall when they get tired of climbing over it, eh?

With all the furniture, books, maternity tops, and baby clothes, and keeping in mind that most things were less than $5, the total came to $209 - not counting the rather expensive highchair. (I paid for it all, except the highchair. Belated shower gifts.) She got a LOT of stuff. We don't know how big the baby will be, and she's hearing horror stories of women who'd bought a lot of newborn sizes, and everything was already too small when the baby came home from the hospital, so she stocked up on 6-12 month sizes yesterday.

That consignment sale is a great idea. Sometimes things are used for so short a period, it makes sense to cycle things through many babies.

Daughter is tiny. Pre-pregnancy she wore XS-XXS sizes. She's already huge in the tummy (six weeks to go), and she's having trouble finding maternity tops that will cover her belly. She can't wear mediums, they fall off her shoulders, but the small tops aren't long enough to cover the belly (they stick almost straight out at the bottom), and small maternity pants are too tight around the tummy, so she wears them with the waists rolled down to under the belly. That leaves a belly gap, and she has nothing to comfortably cover the gap. She doesn't like maternity dresses - they're not suitable for work, and she can't wear long T-shirts for the same reason.

I suggested that she pick out some maternity dresses yesterday, and I can shorten them to the length she needs to serve as tops.

She's seriously huge. I don't see how she can still drive a car - how she can fit behind the steering wheel and be able to reach the pedals - so pretty soon she may not be able to get to work, and the clothing issue will be a non-issue.
