Don't tell Peapod, but I figured out how to use the limited-time coupons they send me.
You can place an order, and select a date and time in the future for delivery, and check out. Then up until late afternoon or evening of the day before delivery, you can continue to add stuff to the order. Usually I schedule delivery for the day or two after I place the order. I place an order for $120 to $200 about every three or four weeks. (Yeah, I don't eat much, especially since that includes household staples, too.)
A few days after my order is delivered, they email me a coupon for X dollars off
my next order over $100. However, that coupon usually expires within
two weeks or so, and I'm not going to need another $100 worth of groceries
within that time frame, so I seldom have an opportunity to use the
coupon. Very frustrating.
I accidentally found a way around that!
I placed my order last week and went through checkout, for delivery this Thursday. In the meantime I have been adding things as I run out of this or that or I think of something else.
Today, they sent me a coupon for my "next order", with the usual short expiration date. Apparently their system didn't notice that although I had checked out last week, I had not yet received this order. So, when I added another item today, I tried the coupon, and it worked!
From now on I'm going to start the order well ahead of delivery, so I can exploit that loophole.
Don't tell Peapod.

I first tried PeaPod grocery service sometime last winter, I think, when it was cold and snowy and I was sick with a cold or something. Now, since the closest grocery store has closed, I'm pretty much hooked on it. I haven't been unhappy with anything they've delivered, except a few times when I didn't pay attention to the size of the product and was surprised when I got the giant size of something. Otherwise, even the selections of produce and meat sent with my order have been good. In fact, the meat and fresh veggies have been impressive.
The website is easy to use once you figure it out. They save past orders, so you don't have to hunt for the items you like every time - just bring up your history and select from that for the regular stuff. You do have to pay for delivery. I think it might be about $7, but I'm not sure because ever since my first order they send me email coupon codes I can use for free delivery, so I rarely pay that, and if you select less popular delivery time windows, you can get a discount or even free. You are expected to tip the driver, but that's your decision as to how much, and I'm more than happy to do it. I just ask myself what it's worth to me not to have to traipse around the store, load and unload the cart, deal with the cashier, pack the car, drive home, and unload the car. The driver is willing to carry the bags into the kitchen and even put the cold stuff away for you, but I always have them just put it on the porch.
You can save the delivery charge and tip by picking up your order at the store. I haven't tried that because as far as I'm concerned that defeats the purpose. Also, they do take manufacturer's coupons. You just give them to the driver and it's deducted from the bill. Again, I don't bother with coupons. My experience with coupon clipping is that they make me buy things I otherwise would not have bought.
I've always kept a shopping list on paper on the kitchen counter, adding things as I think of it, but PeaPod will keep a running cart list for you between visits, so that's where my shopping list is now.
Daughter snorked at me that the prices were probably higher. I'd kept receipts from in-person shopping trips at various stores, and no, the prices are the same as I paid in person, with the usual minor difference you'd expect to see between stores. PeaPod does have sale items clearly marked and recommended.
Something went wrong with this last order. A quart container of yogurt burst, and the eggs were squashed. I got credit for them, and the driver said to keep the eggs, there might be some unbroken ones I could use. Well, the egg carton was a mess, yellow all over and limp and soggy with yogurt, but when I ran water over the mess in the sink, it turned out only the two end eggs were broken, and 10 were unbroken. I got 10 free eggs. Cool.
Oh, and the bags! They don't over pack them, so you get a bunch of large, strong, plastic bags with handles. You can give them to the driver on your next order for recycling, or you can keep them. I love them. I use them to move stuff from the old house to here, and to store stuff here, and just generally whatever.
So, if you have PeaPod.com in your neighborhood, I highly recommend them. Especially if you like being a hermit.

Not much to say. I'm doing next to nothing, except that somehow I still manage to mess up the house and create laundry --- and still can't keep up with it.
That robin I'd mentioned who was hunting in my front yard is still there every day, and he seems to have laid claim to the territory. 0ne day another robin landed on the lawn and was happily hunting, ignoring robin #1, and robin #1 had a fit. He attacked, and there was quite an aerial battle, until the stranger retreated to the lawn across the street. Later, the stranger hopped into the street, and "my" robin marched back and forth on the curb, as if to say "the line is drawn here!", until the interloper retreated.
The cyst in Jasper's throat doesn't seem to have gotten any larger since it refilled after draining, still slightly smaller than maybe a ping pong ball. But he's still beating up on his water dish, splashing in it and emptying it all over the kitchen floor twice a day. It's low enough that I'm sure it's not hurting his neck. I think he's just playing. But this is a serious problem, since it means I can't leave him alone for even a day (let alone the two or three days to go to the country house) unless I have Daughter come in twice a day to refill his dish.
No, the water dispensers won't work for two reasons - he's so timid the glug glug will scare him away from the water altogether, and if there's somehow no sound he'll just empty the entire reservoir in one play session. 'Tis a puzzlement.
I need a way to allow him to drink, but discourage him from splashing.
Daughter believes in using "correct" terms for everything with the Nugget. The other day I was at their house and commented to Nugget that she's getting so very tall, she's already up to my chest (she'll be four next month). She ran over to her daddy, stood close in front of him, put her hand on the top of her head, and said "Yes! I'm already higher than Daddy's penis!"
The taste of Spring weather was short. The past week has been very cold. The township had an Easter Egg hunt on Saturday (Nugget's age group ran to gather eggs lying on the outfield of a baseball diamond --- the eggs were just lying there on the very short grass, plastic eggs with candy inside, it looked like the place had been scatter-bombed --- and of the hundreds of eggs, three contained gift certificates for a craft store. Nugget got one of them. But, it was so cold I was wearing a winter coat and a fur scarf over a heavy sweater, and after the egg gathering I went back to the car for shelter from the wind while everyone else visited the playground.
I have fallen in love with PeaPod grocery deliveries. I'll still go to the store for anything I want to see and touch, like fresh vegetables, but I think I'm pretty well locked in for everything that comes in a package. No more lugging dozens of bags to the car, lifting them from the trunk, and dragging them to the house. By the time I finish a major trip on my own, I'm too tired to put the stuff away. The products don't cost more - in fact they run a lot of sales. There is a delivery fee and a driver tip, but they keep sending me email coupons for free delivery, and I'm more than happy to add a tip. And the driver takes manufacturers' coupons that are deducted from the bill before it goes to the credit card. I love it!
Which reminds me - time to put together something for dinner. Bye!

3824 Confused

Confusing snow. All the weather sites said "light flurries", and "total accumulation 1 inch or less." A half hour ago, there was (were?) already three inches, and it was coming down fast and heavy, big clumpy blobs, and I was rapidly losing the will to live. Now, precipitation has stopped, the sun is out, the road has melted clear, and there's maybe an inch of new stuff left on the ground in shaded spots.
I don't understand.

PeaPod is wonderful! It keeps track of my prior orders, including stuff I bought on trips to the Stop & Shop, so all I have to do is check off stuff I want more of. Delivery is slightly less than $7 (except that as a new customer, I get several weeks of free delivery) plus an optional tip for the driver, and I consider it worth that. Daughter wondered if the items cost more, but I compared some old register strips to the PeaPod online prices, and they are pretty much the same. Pistachios are cheaper, canned soup seems to run a few cents more, and so on. In the aggregate it looks like no real difference in cost.
The only problem is that they don't have everything I would buy in the store. Like they don't have the Quaker granola cereal, or Stacy's pita chips in the flavors I like. I suspect they "PeaPod" only the most popular of the brands and flavors.

I just noticed that my minivan is blue! I've had it for 13 years. When I bought it, it was a strange color mid-way between dark green and blue. Half the people asked described it as green, half as blue. I described it as blue-green. But now, "suddenly", it's definitely dark blue. Not even a hint of green. Weird.
