This snapping turtle was in my back yard yesterday.
Other turtles in other years have tried to lay eggs in my yard, but had been unable to dig more than an inch or two into the solid clay. This lady was perhaps a little smarter. She made four attempts right up next to the foundation. The dirt (I refuse to call it soil) is likely to be a little looser there, having been backfilled and not having been packed by heavy equipment running over it. Still, she dug four holes. She didn't bother to refill the first three shallow holes so I assume there are no eggs there. She did fill the fourth (right next to the air conditioner units), so maybe she got deep enough to actually lay eggs there.
This snapper is pretty small, about the size of a standard dinner plate. Previous visitors have been almost turkey platter sized, and covered with moss. They come up from the little stream/ditch at the end of my yard, that feeds into the lake just down the road.

I've changed the title back to "I Don't Understand", now that it's available again. It's more appropriate (although "I Don't Approve!" might be even better). (Note: The number in the post title is a sequence number, having nothing to do with contents.)

Can't post comments to blogger blogs today. Getting error messages. So, to RockyCat - "Coincidence! I found one in my back yard this morning (photo to follow in blog). They're out now looking for places to lay eggs."
And here's the subject of my comment:
Snapping turtle in my back yard this morning. Slightly larger than a dinner plate. Her throat is thick, but her actual head and eyes are tiny.
She'd dug several holes in the grass for laying eggs, but hadn't filled any of them in. This hole (following photo) was the closest to her. It's not in focus because I was afraid to get too close or stand there very long. There are some brown round things in the hole, but I'm not convinced they are eggs. They seem too small. But unless a very brave rabbit ran up and pooped in the snapper's nest, I don't know what else they could be.
