3698 White guys can't shake.

The end move in politics is to pick up a gun.

Latest video virus, Harlem Shake.  It's disgusting.  Buncha guys bouncing and kicking and throwing their arms around.  That's NOT the Harlem Shake!  It's like people who think belly dancing is just wiggling around.  I want to slap them.  If that's what you want to do, do it, but don't call it something it's not!

THIS is the real Harlem Shake:

Note the shoulders.  That's an integral part of the dance, and that takes practice.

In an email from the township:  "Alternate side parking: If snow falls on an even day, parking is permitted on the odd-numbered side of the street. If snow falls on an odd day, parking is permitted on the even-numbered side of the street."

This has left me confused.  Badly worded, difficult to remember.  Wouldn't "even=even odd=odd" make more sense if you want people to remember?  Also, what happens if it starts snowing at 5 PM and snows continuously until 5 AM?  Which side should you park on to avoid being towed?  No matter where you're parked when you go to bed, it's going to be the wrong side for half the time.

---------------------------------

I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.  I have been sick continuously since the hurricane, since late October.  Head cold, chest cold, pneumonia, bronchitis.  I finished the bronchitis antibiotic about five days ago, and three days ago I seem to have started a sinus infection.  I've been sick for more than four months.  I feel stronger than I did after I got out of the hospital, but I still don't want to do much.  (And yes, I'm quitting smoking, since late December.  That adds stress and makes me nasty mean.)

NJ hates me.  NJ is trying to kill me.  NYC pollution blowing across the bay is destroying my immune system.

3230 If you like it put a jingle belt on it

Sunday, April 24, 2011

Laugh, and the world laughs with you. Laugh hysterically for no apparent reason,
and they’ll leave you alone.

Many wedding receptions feature a bellydancer. This one was a bit unexpected. (Skip ahead to about 1:50. Gypsy, catch the drop and rise at the end. Frankly, he's in a LOT better shape than he looks.)

(I don't think he realized it, but he had some pretty good mid-eastern-styled moves there.)

3163 Almost a Honey

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Anything important is never left to the vote of the people. We only get to vote on some man; we never get to vote on what he is to do.

-- Will Rogers --

True, and all the more reason to elect intelligent people willing to change direction based on new information, rather than robots blinded by ideology.

Beautiful day today, except for the wind. It was 60 degrees by 9 am, clear blue sky, warm sun --- but wind! Gusts hitting 50 mph.

One of my bathroom vents thumps when the wind blows. Outside it's just ting ting ting, but inside it sounds like someone pounding on the front door, or hammering on a wall. I went to the door several times before I figured it out.

My front yard is filling with oak leaves. It seems like everyone around here has a leaf blower. The neighborhood has been filled with the sound of them for days. I guess I can expect more tomorrow or whenever the wind stops.

Me, I just run the mulching mower over leaves. It's faster, and the leaves "disappear" into future topsoil. Problem eliminated.

Someone recommended this video to me. It's dance sequences from many movies melded into one, to "Footloose". Very enjoyable.

The above video brought Gregory Hines back to mind. I have always adored him, and I do miss him. It's Wednesday, and time for the Honey of the Week, but he doesn't really qualify. My admiration for him didn't have a lustful component; I simply adored him, a talented and thoroughly nice person, as close as one gets these days to a Renaissance man.

Don't give me "I don't watch videos in blogs". Watch this. It will make you smile, and energize your day. (Not at work, though. Tap dancing requires full sound.)

[From the Movie: "Tap". Outstanding tap performances by Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr., and legendary tap dance veterans Harold Nicholas, Jimmy Slyde, Howard 'Sandman' Sims, Bunny Briggs, Steve Condos, Arhur Duncan and Pat Rico.]

"What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say."
-- Ralph Waldo Emerson --

---------------------------------------

Last night was the first meetup of my singles' group. Reservations did gradually fall away, so by 6:30 pm I was expecting six women. Four showed up. Two who had said yes did not. I hear that's pretty typical. We also had one man arrive who insisted that he had RSVP'd yes, but neither I nor Meetup had any record of that. No big deal.

The guy was a physicist, and one of the women was a theoretical mathematician, so the conversation somehow started with imaginary numbers, and veered into multiple dimensions and intersections of multidimensional objects , and the nature of time. One of the other women was ... I'm not sure what to call her, but she sees orbs and hears spirits, that sort of thing ... so that conversation occasionally took an odd turn (I'd like to make a joke about "dementional objects", but foo, I've had experiences with ESP and "ghosts", and I believe in a kind of reincarnation, so I can't).

The service was terrible! I had called the restaurant last week to ask if I'd need reservations, and had been told that Tuesday nights were quiet. It wasn't. There was some kind of conference going on in the back room, and when that was over, the participants stayed for dinner. Every table and the bar was full. Then about 8:30, a guy started setting up speakers right next to our table. Uh oh. Turned out it was team trivia, so we played. That was fun.

At leaving, one woman urged me in the parking lot to expand the group to lower ages. Her argument was that men in their fifties and sixties always want women in their thirties and forties. Um, yeah, so what? When an older man wants a younger woman, it's often because he's looking for a nurse, someone to take care of him. Besides, there are plenty of other groups for the younger singles. He can go there. (And if a guy isn't rich or strikingly handsome, he's unlikely to find the trophy caretaker, anyway, and he should know that, and if he doesn't, he's stupid, so why would we want him anyway? But I didn't say that.)

I don't have the faintest idea what to do next. We never got around to talking about that.

-----------------------------------

Does anyone besides me remember Zork? It was a text-based computer game. Jay and I used to play it for hours. He had a huge piece of paper on which he had mapped the underground, with locations of items and dangers.

Gathering weapons and tools and finding your way around is one level of difficulty - figuring out how to talk to the system is the other. It sometimes seems to be very obstinate.

A description, and how to play, are at http://en.allexperts.com/e/z/zo/zork.htm.

You can play it at http://thcnet.net/zork/index.php.

This is beautiful(warning - the music may be too loud for work, turn speakers down):

1690 The Snake

Tuesday, February 12, 2008

A beautiful snake:

It's interesting now, but when she hits 50, she's gonna have pain when her knees, hips, and spine revolt, just like belly dancers who used to do a lot of floorwork in their youth. Tiny injuries and overstretching builds up.

1292 Guan Yin Dancers Rehersal

Friday, June 8, 2007

If you liked the clip in the previous post, you might like this - it's the performance interspersed with rehearsal footage. I didn't realize that the dancers in the rear are male!

By the way, I noticed that the video screen in the previous post (and perhaps this one?) didn't show up in the Bloglines feed. If you use Bloglines only and didn't see it, go to the actual blog (click on the title).

1164 Dancing Fool

Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Ballroom dance class this evening. I'm so frustrated by the whole topic.

I have never learned to dance, not really. Our parents never made any effort toward socializing us, and I went to a tiny high school in the middle of nowhere. We never had any dances, other than the prom, and everybody lived too far apart to just hang out and dance. We'd go to Manny's, occasionally, where there was a jukebox, but mostly we just sat around and listened to the music. Farm/mountain boys don't dance a lot. At the Russian hall we did folk dances and polkas.

In college there were weekly dances at the Husky Lounge, but I wasn't dating, and so I didn't dance much. The Twist was easy, and the Madison, and a few other mass dances. With my left/right learning disability, it was impossible for me to simply watch people and then do what they do. Still is.

I met Ex#1 at a college dance, but I don't think we ever actually danced. He was drafted during my senior year, we were married a few days after I graduated, he went to Germany and I went to a teaching job in Gettysburg, and for the next three years we were together only when he was on leave, and we never danced.

Between Ex#1 and Ex#2 I dated Amadeo. Amadeo was a dancer. The Cha Cha and Mambo were big. Also, Amadeo was short, just my size. He was a strong lead, and I learned with him. I was confident on the dance floor for the first time ever. We cleared the floor once in a club in New Haven, doing a combination Swing/Cha Cha. People cheered and clapped, and the band kept playing until we quit ourselves. I think back on that now, and can hardly believe it happened.

Then I married Ex#2. He didn't dance. Period.

In my 30s I took up Mid-Eastern dance, on the advice of my chiropractor, to help strengthen my back. That's when I learned something I didn't know - I not only have no sense of rhythm, I can't hear the beat! In Mid-Eastern dance, there are only a few common rhythms, and they are quite different. But even after 30 years and thousands of hours of listening and dancing, I still can't tell them apart. Well, I usually recognize a beladi (dum dum tek-a-tek dum tek-a-tek tek-a), but sometimes I confuse it with saidi (dum tek tek-a-dum dum tek-a-tek tek-a). The only one I consistently recognize is the ayub, or zar, which has a unique bouncing sound (dum, ka dum tek), but half the time I can't remember what it's called.

I was good, back when I was slender and muscular, and could do the floorwork. Not so good with the fast stuff, I could easily get off the beat, but with the slow, I hear I was the epitome of sensual. (Kashalamar was my rhythm. Too bad I didn't recognize it half the time.) I stopped dancing shortly after moving from Washington to here, in 1983, and didn't get back to it until 2005ish.

Jay was a competitive ballroom dancer, with trophies and everything, before he moved from Texas to here. When we were dating, we tried dancing once - a polka - and it was such a disaster we never danced again. He didn't seem to miss it. Without a club here, it just didn't come up, I guess. Maybe the Asperger's?

So here I am. Until New Year's Eve, I hadn't danced, "out", in public, in more than 20 years, and now I want to. I am extremely shy about dancing. I always feel so clumsy. I don't know what to do. I watch kids now, and I can't figure out what they're doing. It looks like they're just jumping up and down, and I can't (won't!) do that.

On New Year's Eve, I did my own thing, and several women told me that I move beautifully. I have graceful arms, and lots of smooth hip action, but my feet kind of get lost. In the ballroom dance class, several women said that I look so graceful, "you float". Complete strangers. I got an email from someone who had been at the dance at the Mensa gathering - I didn't go to the dance floor, but I did move to the music standing next to the table - and he said, "Please don't take this the wrong way, and I hope it doesn't come across as inappropriate, but you are one amazing dancer. I couldn't keep my eyes off you when you were moving to the music. I love to dance, but don't know many women who enjoy it. At our age, a lot of them have settled into a boring life and don't like doing anything physically exerting."

Wow. I'm impressed with me! (The "at our age" was a bonus. I think he's in his mid-forties.)

So, there's some possibility there. I've got something I should be able to work with.

The ballroom dance class was supposed to give me some "ah, so this is what you do with your feet", which can be modified to fit what's actually going on.

'Tain't working. It's destroying what little confidence I'd acquired over the past few months.

First off, I can't "hear" the beat. I can't tell a waltz from a rumba. I can't figure out how fast or slow you're supposed to go. It all sounds the same to me. I can't make my feet do what they're supposed to do. It's all a mixed up mish-mash. I can't even maintain an ordinary vanilla box step.

Maybe it would help if I had a strong partner. There is one guy in the class who came with his wife, but she broke her arm and is sitting out, so he has decided he's MY partner, and he's awful. He doesn't telegraph at all, and just changes direction suddenly, tromping all over me. Worse than no partner at all. Which is the alternative....

I don't know whether to keep going or not. I was just starting to feel hopeful and courageous about getting out on a dance floor, and this class is chewing away at that.
