3750 Baby can count!

Thursday, July 11, 2013

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than
it ceases to be serious when people laugh.
--George Bernard Shaw--

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Nugget can count to 11!  She's now 2 years and 2.5 months old.

If there are several items, she can count them for me, accurately up to eleven.  After that it gets inventive.  I asked her to count 16 peanuts for me the other day:
one
two
three
four
five
six
seven
eight
nine
ten
eleven
nine
ten
eleven
nine
ten...
TEN peanuts!

Of course I clapped and cheered.

She's very different from her mother.  Daughter would have counted to eleven, given me a quizzical look, pushed the eleven aside, counted the remainder, and said there were eleven here and five there.  Nugget is very literal and very sure of herself.

That is sweet. I remember a children's book (in Swedish) where a little boy had problems with counting, and with the math I know now (but did not know when I read it), I would call it "recursion" what he did. My translation of his counting will be "...seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, tenteen, eleventeen, twelveteen, thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nineteen, tenteen...". Maybe Nugget will try something like that next?

(Hope you accept such a geeky comment - I just suppose a fellow mensan would do that.)

The little boy in the story seems to have understood the concept of numbers representing quantities. Nugget, at this point, anyway, understands the concept of assigning words to items, in order ... I'm not sure she understands "quantity".
